Study guidelines for Exam #1:

 

In all answers, it is helpful to refer to the readings.  This is especially important for graduate students.

 

At the exam, you will be asked to answer 5 of the following questions?

 

1)      What is traditionalism?  How has the concept of traditionalism shaped the study of Native American art? 

2)      Identify the following (answer TWO of the following FOUR): 

a.       A.H.L.F. Pitt Rivers

b.      Franz Boas

c.       Stewart Culin

d.      George Heye

3)      Discuss the role of early exhibitions in the understanding and presentation of Native art, including the 1931 Exposition of Tribal Arts and the 1941 MOMA Show.

4)      Discuss the role of government policy, such as the Indian Arts and Crafts Board, in the production and marketing of Native art in the early twentieth century.  

5)      Discuss the rise of Native artists who were known by name, such as Louisa Keyser, Nampeyo, and Maria Martinez.  How did this change the arts and the cultures from which they came?

1)      Discuss the rise of printing co-ops among the Inuit.  How did this change art production in the region? 

2)      Discuss the role of tourism in the development of Native art.  Describe the different forms of tourism and the importance of the souvenir.
